All believers can prophesy but not all who prophesy are prophets. Prophecies are messages based on revelation received from God and most prophecy should be for edification, exhortation, and comfort to believers. Those receiving a prophetic word need hearts that are open and seeking God with faith and love. The purpose of prophecy is to show God’s love, give us hope, and/or build our faith.
A prophet is chosen by God to receive a message from Him or His angels, to be delivered to a specific person or people. There are many ways that prophets receive God’s message – in visions, dreams, angels and more. Prophets give words from the Lord, sometimes they encourage others and other times they are warnings, instructions, or directions for the times ahead.
There are many false teachers and prophets in the body of Christ in these last days, so we need to be aware. False teachers and prophets may take a truth and misuse it. However, true prophecy is more and more important today, so we must trust prophecy, but use discernemnt!!
Much of the Bible is prophetic revelation; it reveals God’s power and greatness.
